If you are a creative type, then you know the feeling when stumbling accross something that sets off an explosion in your mind, flooding it with ideas. This feeling keeps you up late, glaring at the ceiling, lost in thought about all of the avenues that are now open due to your new found knowledge. It is one of the best feelings. I was lucky enough to experience this feeling again last night when working late on a project that I am close to finishing.
So, I am plugging away when it is brought to my attention by the customer that certain pictures on the site need to show up randomly each time a user loads the page. I know how to do this with Javascript and could implement it fairly quickly, however, I am developing a content mangament system (CMS) website which is a completely different animal. I need to, in other words, have dynamic entries randomly appear every time the page is loaded. So, I start looking for an add-on at Devot-ee.com. Within a couple of minutes I stumble accross Entry Lottoree that does exactly what I need. Within another couple of minutes I have the add-on installed, the code in place and voilà, the deed is done and I am happy.
Moving on, the same customer also posts hour long videos on Vimeo and will eventually embed these videos on their new website. So, when building the section that will house these videos I had to think about how to tackle this, because simply embedding the video will render a playable video when clicked. I don't want this on the home page because it is thumbnail size and too small of an area to play the video. The same goes for the Media page which will show the last ten uploaded videos. The only video I want to make playable is the main video page that will load when the user clicks to it. Again, I go back to Devot-ee.com and do a search for add-ons pertaining to Vimeo. Once again, within five minutes I come accross Antenna which allows you to post embedded video codes from Vimeo with some extra flexibility. Since Vimeo has an automatic thubmnail selector, all I had to do was download and install the Antenna add-on, write some code. Once again I have solved my problem within five minutes. I am two for two.
Finally, in the late hours of the night, I was gawking at one of the entry pages on the backend thinking about all space wasted because by default a custom field will span the entire width of your monitor. Since I am a hands-on type learner and haven't researched everything about the EE 2.0 upgrades, I didn't know organizing, and shortning field widths was such an easy task. Simply, click the Show Toolbar button at the top right corner of the entry page, All fields will then reveal sizing handles and moving handles so you can customize your layout. Better yet, I can move fileds from other tabs and bring them into the Publish Tab. This is usefull when you want the client to have everything on one page (i.e. bring the Entry Date field from the Date Tab to the Publish Tab). After all, the idea is to take the burden off the customer in regard to updating their website.
All of these things might not seem like something to get excited over, but these experiences lead to the overall idea that, if I can think of it, it is probably already developed and waiting for me to download, install, and use it. The process is very quick and amazingly easy. It helps my confidence with clients because I know that I can help them with their unique ideas for a website. All of which couldn't be done without ExpressionEngine and the extensive support surrounding the CMS. It truly is a great thing.
Lastly, I know there is a handful of amazing CMS software out there, but just like everyone else, I have my preference when designing websites, and it is ExpressionEngine.
