You learn something new every day. Now, let me start by saying that I never claim tutorials or “examples” as my own unless they really are. In this case, I found this remarkable solution on the ExpressionEngine forums on an unsolved thread. I know you are already questioning this blog, but trust me.
If you are searching for a way around the category indicator word, then I am sure you have come across the following solution:
{exp:query sql="SELECT cat_id FROM exp_categories
WHERE cat_url_title = '{segment_2}'"}
{exp:weblog:entries weblog="products" category="{cat_id}"}
<p><a href="{title_permalink={segment_1}/{segment_2}}">
{title}</a></p>
{/exp:weblog:entries}
{/exp:query}
The example above is simply using a bit of query to get the cat_id from the URL title so you can bypass the trigger word and make your URLs that much “cleaner”. I have personally used this example on a couple of sites. Well, I have another solution that is much easier and more than likely a bug, but one that works without any major issues that I have seen on my setup.
Go to -
EE1: Admin > System Administration > Global Weblog Preferences
EE2: Admin > Channel Administration > Global Preferences
-and put a dot (.) in as the indicator word for your categories. For some reason it removes the word altogether. Obviously, this is a bug, but I have used it, as have other developers, without consequences. However, use this workaround at your own risk!! You may not be so lucky and could have other set-ups or needs for your site where problems might arise. One last thing, I have had the chance to test it on EE version 1.6 and 2.2 which worked with both versions.
